We Got The Soul new track from Waxer/Duck Alert & TJ Fresh

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, Waxer Demo Track | Posted on 20-02-2009

My homeboys Duck Alert & TJ Fresh put a fly new beat up on Dope Tracks and I felt compelled to rhyme on it.  Now for anyone that knows me, I hardly ever rhyme unless I’m drunk at a party (then it’s the cat sat on the mat type stuff) but I just couldn’t help myself, the vibe of this song is so reminiscent of good childhood memories, the 70s & 80s, my experiences growing up with Hip Hop etc…

This is not mixed down, a bit raw, probably needs a revocal and Duck Alert’s gotta do some cuts on the end, but you get the idea, let me know what you think…

Well, you be the judge, here’s the track:

Lyrics…

I REMEMBER THE 1970S
BACK WHEN A JUBBLY WAS THE ONLY REMEDY
I NEEDED, BACK IN 72, THE YEAR I WAS SEEDED
MY MATES FROM MY ESTATE WAS WHO I USED TO BE WITH
ENDLESS SUMMERS, EARLIEST I CAN RECALL
WAS AROUND 77, ALL MY MATES LOVED FOOTBALL
PANINI CARDS, BUT I ROCKED STAR WARS FIGURES
OBSESSED WITH THE FORCE, MARATHONS NOT SNICKERS
SILVER JUBILEE STREET PARTY
CARE FREE TIMES WITH SESAME STREET RHYMES
LONG HAIR, FLARES, LIVERPOOL FC
DOCKER HUGHES RUNNING FOR PRESIDENCY
THEN ALONG CAME THATCHER, HAH, THE MILK SNATCHER
BUT AROUND THE CORNER WAS A MOVEMENT THAT WOULD CAPTURE
A WHOLE GENERATION, WITH ME INCLUDED
HIP HOP, MY WHOLE LIFE CONCLUDED

WHO GOT THE SOUL, WHO GOT THE SOUL
WHO GOT THE SOUL, TELL ME WHERE’S THE SOUL
WHO GOT THE SOUL, WHERE’S THE SOUL
WHO GOT THE SOUL, YOU KNOW WE GOT THE SOUL

I FELL IN LOVE WITH HIP HOP IN ’82
PRINCE CHARLES & DIANA WITH THE RED, WHITE & BLUE
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, GRANDMASTER FLASH
WATCHING MY ZX SPECTRUM CRASH
83 STARTED SCHOOL, WHAT A WASTE
THEN ELECTRO CAME AND I GOT MY NEXT TASTE
OF FUNK FROM THE MOTHERSHIP, SOUL FROM THE HEART
THEN MY VINYL COLLECTION HAD IT’S START
STREETSOUNDS ELECTRO, THEN I HAD TO BUY THE 12S
FROM 12S TO 1210′S IN ’88 MAKIN’ BLENDS
THROUGH COLLEGE WANTIN’ TO BE BIG DADDY KANE
’89 PE IN BRIGHTON EXPANDED MY GAME
VISCOUS DJS CUTTIN’ UP THE PLASTIC
BATTLED SOME SUCKERS, NOTHIN’ TOO DRASTIC
MET DUCK ALERT & TJ FRESH
20 YEARS LATER MAKIN’ TRACKS SOOOOO DEF….

WHO GOT THE SOUL, WHO GOT THE SOUL
WHO GOT THE SOUL, TELL ME WHERE’S THE SOUL
WHO GOT THE SOUL, WHERE’S THE SOUL
WHO GOT THE SOUL, YOU KNOW WE GOT THE SOUL

COMIN’ THROUGH IN THE ’90S
BEATS SO HARD THEY COULD BLIND ME
BRITCORE LEADING THE WAY FOR THE RAP SCENE
BEATS AND RHYMES SO DEF AND HARDCORE
BRITAIN KICKING ARSE THE WORLD KNEW THE SCORE
1994, THINGS FALL APART
AROUND THE TIME THE BACKPACK HIP HOP START
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FUNK? WHO GOT THE SOUL?
THE HEART OF HIP HOP HAS JUST BEEN STOLE
MOVIN’ ON, KIDS, JOB & A HOUSE
HIP HOP HAD TURNED INTO A CHURCH MOUSE
YEAR BY YEAR, A FEW GOOD JOINTS
THE DOWNFALL OF HIP HOP IS WHERE MY FINGER POINTS
ARE WE TOO OLD? HAVE THINGS MOVED ON?
CAN AN OLD MAN LIKE ME STEP UP AND MAKE A RAP SONG?
MAYBE, YOU BE THE JUDGE I’M JUST KICKIN’ A FLOW
DUCK ALERT CUT IT UP TELL EM WE GOT SOUL…

  1. what can is say….

love the sentiment -just think maybe you should stick to being on the mic when u are doing a radio show..!

    BIG UP TJ FRESH!

  2. Yo Waxer my man, I think you need to understand
the rhymes that you write with that mic in your hand
are sounding so weak like a donkey’s ass
You been sniffin’ glue or smokin’ grass
Now, I’ve come here to insult you and that’s a fact
Brought my sandwiches along and my stickball bat
One to eat and another to beat
your sad ass right down wack rapper’s street
Now don’t get too angry cos you know it’s true
that you failed this time so get out my crew
and if I see you outside or at my show
I’m gonna send out that car – yo, the White Volvo
So off you go and get out of my sight
This was T.J. Fresh and I wish you goodnight…
    Ooooooohhhhhoooooooo!
T.J. Fresh cold chillin’ in the studio…
    I’m outta here!!!
Peace, unity, love and having fun :D

  3. Ha ha yeah Dan I feel you homey! My mic skills are pretty poor I gotta say, but I just get the urge and then I gotta do summat! I might see if I can get some decent MCs on this beat. Check out TJ Fresh & Duck Alert on Dope tracks, http://dopetracks.com/lordfreaktjfresh & http://dopetracks.com/duckalert some proper UK business! 5000!!!

  4. well…you pretty much summed up my 70′s and 80′s there too man…almost eerily so!!! I admire your bravery on the mic man i wish i had that in me (anyone who heard my tape of ‘it takes two’ over the instrumental will know i don’t, and it can’t be allowed to happen ever again) but….i loved this for the heartfelt jam that it is Waxoff!!! props kid, can u send me it cos the link ain’t working for me :( Hip hop may have gone tits up in ’94 but thank f** there’s ppl around to keep it alive cos i love it now as much as i did then. PEACE I AM AN AUDI

  5. gotta sad truth to tell…

i was due to go to see PE in brighton in ’89, but my mate dropped out and said “i’d rather get fight the power live instead!”!?!…WOT???..gutted…

Basically, I was only 14, and I bricked it when i was confronted with the thought of braving it on my own. i basically stood and stares at the ticket when 8 o clock came around and thought…”what have i done!??”.

    I’ve never forgotten that day…f**k.

Anyway, hope you had a good time there tho’

    Baz.

  6. Hah EZ Pete nice 1 mate yeah that jam was hype, I was a wild eyed teenager buzzin’ off the energy… I remember I was standing near MC Duke and Cookie Crew were over near the barriers and I was a bit startstruck! MC Duke was frontin’ hard with his crew, dressed in proper ’89 UK B Boy style, mate those were the days! Good look on the listen man, speak soon, peace!
