Theory 77 – Reasons

In the early to mid 90s myself and Duce did a weekly scratchfest/B Boy event in a bar in Pompey called Slurps.  I can’t remember how long it ran, I think maybe around 3 months before the management kicked us out?  Well anyway, it was there that I met this fresh faced scratch fanatic known then only as “Theory”.  I saw him around at various events and then noticed him starting to compete at events, not only that but winning too.  Theory’s style was… well, vicious to be honest!  I knew he was a horror fan and I think maybe this bled into his scratching & turntablism.  Now I’m sure I’m gonna get this all arse about face and dates wrong and all that but I’m doing my best!

Theory, alongside Shanks & someone else (ooops!) started a DJ crew called Plastic Soldiers, dunno if they’re all still affiliated or moved on now or what but still they were dope!  So Theory moved round in various Hip Hop circles… I had moved to London and got bits and bobs of information about him and learned he’d started combining his DJ skills with other musical styles.  I gotta admit I was surprised to hear this but I heard his music and can only say he is in a genre of his own.  You can’t call it folk music, or roots or blues or turntablism or really pigeonhole it anywhere.  I’ll leave it to you to visit No Frills Records to check his music out for yourself.

So Theory carved himself a path through music in the UK with various influences, styles & some damn fine turntablism skills… now Theory 77 is very active in the UK music scene, check his site out for all the links, just google him for all his myspace/soundcloud/blah blah links and anything not listed on his site.

Even though Theory has a wide range of skills with Rhyming, poetry, spoken word, turntablism, production, engineering and knowledge of various acoustic instruments, he often returns to his roots… it’s with this that brings me to this piece of devastatingly fresh audio, a just over 30 minutes mix of def old school tracks and razor sharp cuts.  This ain’t your average “Golden Era” mix with a load of predictable tracks in there either… there are a lot of tracks you hardly ever hear, so massive props for that!  He still intersperses that with def tracks like “Lyrics Of Fury” & “Breakin Bells” but biggest pat on the back goes for including one of my fave Hip Hop tracks ever, “Holy War”.

So onto the Audio, here’s Theory 77… Reasons… enjoy & if you like his stuff PLEASE SUPPORT HIM & BUY HIS MUSIC!  Nuff respect, see ya!

  1. Holy crap! Thanks again Steve – massively appreciated, unexpected and humbling.

Taz was the other dude from Plastic Soldiers – he’s all but given up on the tables from what I hear. Shanks on the other hand I’m still in regular contact with and he still kills it.

We’re supposed to be doing a Plastic Soldiers EP kind of deal in the near future (although he’s pretty slack!) so I’ll keep you posted.
    Thanks a lot once again.

    Peas.
