Disco Scratch

Many thanks for supporting DS for it’s first year in existence… some things didn’t work out for one reason or another.. I would have like to have put on an old school jam with some prime UK artists but didn’t have the resource… an old school meet up never happened, I was going to try to get a load more vinyl & tape rips up but I’m afraid time was against me and lastly because of the weather I just couldn’t get over to Repo136 to do the Christmas podcast…

BUT

We have had loads of dope tape rips, vinyl, some great discussions and next year round about spring I’ll be taking the site down, revamping it and coming back like Lee Majors!  Hopefully there will be a meet up next year, plus the database will be back up and running and I’ll be opening a shop for all your purchases.  I’ll have stuff like custom graf clothing, jewelery like 4 finger rings, tag belts, old trainers like Troop & British Knights & maybe some old vinyl & such.  If you are interested in having your stuff available in the shop please let me know.

I want to introduce a new feature where you can upload your own audio & video for sharing with other old schol UK heads.

So, on that note, I’ll be away for a couple of weeks over Christmas and new year so I really hope everyone has a great holiday season and I’ll speak to you in the new year.

Yes yes y’all!!! Get your funky egg nog on, light those scented candles, bung on those dodgy 10 year old fire hazard lights, pull back the tab on a cold can of red stripe, throw another log on that open fire and let the dulcit tones of Mr Repo136 & Mr WaxonWaxoff drift merrily over you as we drown you in verbal diorrhea!

Yes, 2 hours of chat about how good Hip Hop used to be, hear us moan about the state of the current scene, join in with our rants about lack of lyricism these days, suede Pumas, diamond pattern socks, 8 ball jackets and when Westwood was good….

That’s right you lucky people, on Saturday 19th December 2009, the 2 leaders in the retro UK Hip Hop scene combine for a legendary podcast. Fuelled by mulled wine, egg nog & meths, we aim to entertain you and ring a few people while we’re recording and put them on the spot. If you know us and we have your number, WATCH OUT!!! We’ll be dropping the dopest old school flavour, some apt Christmas joints, I might even dress up as Waxer Claus who knows!!!

We’ll take some pictures and take your attention for a few seconds as you marvel over pictures of us messing about with that old stuff called “Vinyl” Yes that’s right, only REAL RECORDS getting played here ladies & gentlemen! So, to recap, booze, memories, proper Hip Hop, from Saturday 19th December 2009…. In the words of Eazy E, “Merry muthaphuckin’ Christmas!!!”

Yes people, another track from the vaults of The Palace Of Villainy, this time a tune I never got finished, so I jumped on the mic for the final verse!  I came across Joe quite randomly back about ‘98 or so,he came to my house back when I was living in Plaistow East London, as he was an estate manager and was going to manage the property as I was renting it out.  Lo and behold as I’m showing him round, I opened my upstairs landing cupboard up which I had converted into a vocal booth… then he saw the studio and it was on!  A while later him & Skillion Grimes came to my gaff to record Blagger, and 1 other tune which I haven’t even comped (but will soon!)

These guys are hot on the mic… you’ll know Skillion from his cut “Hot Gal” that featured on the Wordlab 2 copmpilation back around 2002.  I’ve just found Joe on facebook so maybe we can link and get some new tracks done, who knows?

Anyway, I wanted to share this Studio Mix with you, it’s unmastered but is mixed down, hope you like it!  It’s a warning to all those going down the paths of self destruction…

At last I got the mechanics behind the podcast to work properly and now you can find Disco Scratch directly within iTunes, just go to the store and search for Disco Scratch or just plain old “Old School UK Hip Hop”

There’s only me and one other irrelevant podcast there, so I suppose that makes us unique!

SUBSCRIBE IN ITUNES!!!!!

I was aiming to do a podcast monthly, which, er, ahem, I kind of haven’t done!  So, I’m going to put that right by getting the second podcast off the ground and then getting it out monthly.  I want to do a special every couple of months showcasing only old school UK tracks which slipped through the cracks or never saw the light of day… enter Sound Cloud:Send me your track

From now on you can click the Sound Cloud logo to send me a track you want included.  Disco SCratch is all about going into things in some depths… droppin’ some science on the stuff we include in the podcasts, so please add some information, where it was recorded, who with, what equipment was used etc, as much as possible, plus an old school yarn if you can as well!

I”ll be putting up a Disco Scratch phone number soon where you can leave messages about your old school stories.  You can also get us on Skype…if I’m online, you’ll find me on username discoscratch (surprisingly!)  MSN us as well, thediscoscratch at gmail dot com (you know the score, can’t actually write the email address cos of all the junk you get)  I’ve got adium installed, so the Facebook messenger and the MySpace messenger are always on through that… hit me up, yo!

Here’s a quick guide just so that you know how to get the podcast automatically every time I do one.

There are many RSS readers that you can use, basically when you click on the RSS picture at the top of the page you’ll get options with what you want to do with the link.  If you use firefox, you can just add the link as a live bookmark, so every time you launch your browser it’ll refresh to get any new posts.  You can use Outlook, Apple Mail, Newsfire etcthose will get you every post.

Personally, I use iTunes as it then automatically downloads all the audio straight into iTunes, then if you have your ioPod on automatic sync, all you have to do is start iTunes then plug your iPod in and it drops the podcast onto your iPod.  When you look at your iPod menu, any podcasts you haven’t listened to will have a blue dot by it, making it easy to know which is the latest.

An easy link to get the podcast directly linked to iTunes is by just clicking the iTunes link below.  I hope this guide helps, please leave a comment if you need any help!

Merry Christmas one and all, and albeit a little late, here’s the podcast!  The first Disco Scratch podcast, we had a good laugh making it and we hope you like it.  The spirit of what I’m going to be doing with this, is just let my guests be themselves, talk about the music they love, experiences, whatever really…just be natural.

I’ll be speaking to personal friends over the coming months, and some people that are know in the UK Hip Hop scene.

Well, Corrina joined me for the first one and we spoke about sampling, soul, funk, Rare Groove, all kinds of stuff, a little over an hour.  I’m writing this on Christmas Eve at just after twenty past nine, with two ridiculously excited kids upstairs!
