Remember the rap contest on Dave Pearce’s show 20 years or more ago? Disco Scratch is bringing it back.

If you are a proper emcee you can spit poetry off the top of the domepiece at the drop of a hat. This week I invite you to ring me at the Palace of Villainy and get recorded live. The line will be open for half an hour only from 9.30pm to 10pm, then I’ll play the raps one after the other at 10.30 and the chatroom decides the winner.

The reason this is so dope is because you have to have the bollocks to ring up and do 16 bars in one take without nallsing it up! So, real MCs only need apply!

Also I’m bringing back the break to the beat version excursion where I play a break and you have to name the sampling track and artist and for extra geekiness, year and label. It’ll be an old UK cut of course, you gotta ring up with the answer.

In both cases the winner gets whatever plunder I happen to have on that particular week. This week the winner cops an Electro Rock DVD ripped from VHS by yours truly.

So, got what it takes? Come on you old buggers ring up and flex your skills!

UK Hip Hop Radio Tape 14

About time old Waxer drops some more dusty flavour on all you Scratcho Discers!  This tape is a bit shorter than the others I’ve upped but still comes off like frogs legs in Paris.  This must have been bang on the time when the Black Rock n Ron LP “Stop The World” came out as both Tim & Dave are playing cuts from the LP plus Black Rock n Ron were in the UK.  Dunno about you but I think the Stop The World LP is an absolute iron clad classic and I was well happy to hear some flavour from them on this tape.

Thesre are some shout outs from various heads that called into Dave Pearce’s show, one dude shouts out “Area, flex, bob, Crimea, arcade, race & stoop (I think)” so if you recognise those name maybe it was you??  About 30 seconds in there’s a crazy wack housey remix of “Scrum & Then Some“, which some of you may remember as being the much better B Side to the 12 “Black & Proud” by the Dismasters.  All these uploads are unedited, I think it’s important to keep the whole tape as is, whether good or bad.

Also the legendary “How on earth did he become a Hip Hop scratch DJ on one of the most prominent Hip Hop shows of the day” K C J does 2 utterly dreadful mixes on this tape, good selection of tunes but mixed perhaps while he was simultaneously trying to beat the world record for putting on and taking off a wetsuit complete with flippers, mask & oxygen tank as many times as possible, who knows!!!  Still, as pony as his mixing skills were, you gotta love it!!!

This one has no date, but Dave Pearce mentions live on GLR this easter Weekend and I think this was 1989 so gotta be round there somewhere.  This tape’s got audio from the Cash Money & Marvellous Night Network performance they did, I have it on VHS and loved the routine so much I got the audio off my dad’s video recorder onto tape and put it on this one.  Some nice classic Capital Radio jingles and Westwood one liners in here plus the set from DJ Aladdins DMC performance of the year, cuts are fatal, he was the best at transforming back then easily.

So this tape is a bit messed up, I rewound it, fast forwarded it, tapped it about a bit and still ended up with weird noises!  That’s only for the first 5 minutes or so then it settles down.

The first side and half of side 2 is Dave Pearce with legendary shit mixer KCJ doing a couple of mixes that if in a battle Ced Gee could beat with one hand up a cows’ arse blindfolded on a fisher price turntable!

Still, that’s what makes it so listenable.  If it was DJ Aladdin standard we’d pay it no mind!

Well worth a good listen as there are a lot of writer shout outs on this tape, you never know, you may be on it!!  I have no idea which tape it is but one of the rips I’m doing a writer from Pompey rings up and shouts all the Pompey lads.

So my children here is another slice of vintage UK Hip Hop radio, this time it’s a double helping of Mr Timothy Westwood, dated 24th February 1989 & March 3rd 1989, here’s a scan of the front of the inlay:

I think I might have said in an earlier post, that when I used to tape radio shows sometimes I’d be akip and wouldn’t pause the tape, which meant the adverts would still be in, so I used to do these pause button mixes over the adverts, and this tape has 2 such pony mixes, one at about 38 minutes and another around 1 hour… I fully own up to exceptionally bad editing, out of time pauses and THE SHITTEST scratching man has ever witnessed!

There are some other funny moments in the tape, with Westwood classically mis pronouncing names, such as “Skeezo” instead of Stezo, and “Trugay the dub dave” instead of Trugoy from De La Soul, bless him! There’s also a couple of Break to the beat version excursions on this one, I enjoyed ripping it! Enjoy another trip into the foggy mists of the early days of UK Hip Hop!

Alright all, soz for lack of updates recently, absolutely no clue why but no new posts I made were appearing, so I’m hoping to get some new (old!) stuff up this week.  The podcasts didn’t materialise due to a stream of computer problems and whatnot, but who cares, here’s the Disco Scratch Funk!

Deffo some dope Black Steel on this tape, there’s a Cutmaster Swift interview at the start with Dave Pearce & Westwood has Original Concept in the studio.  This tape should spark your grey matter!

I’m getting a fair amount of downloads now, and as much as I have no problem with “Hit n Runners”, seeing as the stuff I put up is fairly niche, I’d appreciate a few comments from you lot just to see what you think of these tapes.  I would imagine most people that download stuff or subscribe would be similar to be, a British B Boy at heart.

I’m a member of oldschoolhiphop.com (sup fam over there!!!) and got a message off a new member, Bobby Dazzler.  He has sent me links to loads of tape rips for Mike Allen, live stuff in the UK, various old acts etc.  I have literally copied the mail he sent me and pasted it straight in here, so maximum respect to him.

As these are not my own tape rips, I can’t vouch for the standard of the quality of any of them, so you’ll have to be the judge of that!

UK Fresh 86 Tape 2 Disco Scratch

Content has been a bit thin over recent weeks my fellow Disco Scratchers, but a bumper update this week should vanquish the hunger pains for that old school material.  Look out for more demo tracks from the vault, late 80s Westwood & Dave Pearce tapes and the next Simon Harris LP.

Anyway, UK Fresh ’86… this tape represents the end of part 1 and first part of part 2.  This is because when Capital put the show out, it was 2 2 hour shows over a Friday and Saturday night, but obviously tapes are only an hour and a half, so hence 3 tapes.

Well people, I hope I find you in fine fettle!  Sorry for lack of updates, hopefully this will make up for it!

So, where do I start?  Uk Fresh ’86.  For those that don’t know, this was the biggest Hip Hop jam to have ever come to the shores of Mighty Blighty.  To be honest, I really don’\t know if there has been a bigger jam.  Certainly in terms of venue, I mean this was at Wembley!  The acts that appeared were:

Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde

I was 14 in 1986 and me old dutch wouldn’t let me go… ahhh, yes I know, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one not allowed to go!  If you look in the History section of the site you’ll see the original scan of the application form for tickets I filled out.  Yes it’s true, my hardcore B Boy style will be blown out the water when you realise I lived in Petersfield!  No crack or guns there people, if Mrs Jones from number 56 dropped her oranges in the street it made the local news!

There are some pictures from the UK Fresh event on the rtbb site, so check ‘em out.  There’s a fair bit of info on the web about Fresh ’86.  You can already download the audio from a number of places, so why download mine?  COS I STAYED UP TO TAPE IT OFF MIKE ALLEN THAT’S WHY!  As with all stuff on DS I only put up stuff I have ripped from my own collection and that is not available elsewhere.  As these 3 tapes were recorded from FM and the MP3s are made from those masters, the quality is about as good as you can get.  I went for 160 kbps as going any higher is pointless really and makes the file size too big.

I recorded this on 3 tapes, so that’s how I’ll deliver it.  All tapes are 1 entire MP3 file, side 1 fades out into a fade in of side 2.  I love the old Capital jingles and Mike Allen saying stuff like “Hit It Cheese!” with great gusto, the old Hawaiin shirt wearing Groove Records on moped visiting legend!
