Gentlemen, ladies, heat up your mics and get practicing. Remember the rap contest on Dave Pearce’s show 20 years or more ago? Disco Scratch is bringing it back.

If you are a proper emcee you can spit poetry off the top of the domepiece at the drop of a hat. This week I invite you to ring me at the Palace of Villainy and get recorded live. The line will be open for half an hour only from 9.30pm to 10pm, then I’ll play the raps one after the other at 10.30 and the chatroom decides the winner.

The reason this is so dope is because you have to have the bollocks to ring up and do 16 bars in one take without nallsing it up! So, real MCs only need apply!

Also I’m bringing back the break to the beat version excursion where I play a break and you have to name the sampling track and artist and for extra geekiness, year and label. It’ll be an old UK cut of course, you gotta ring up with the answer.

In both cases the winner gets whatever plunder I happen to have on that particular week. This week the winner cops an Electro Rock DVD ripped from VHS by yours truly.

So, got what it takes? Come on you old buggers ring up and flex your skills!

This one has no date, but Dave Pearce mentions live on GLR this easter Weekend and I think this was 1989 so gotta be round there somewhere. This tape’s got audio from the Cash Money & Marvellous Night Network performance they did, I have it on VHS and loved the routine so much I got the audio off my dad’s video recorder onto tape and put it on this one. Some nice classic Capital Radio jingles and Westwood one liners in here plus the set from DJ Aladdins DMC performance of the year, cuts are fatal, he was the best at transforming back then easily.

So my children here is another slice of vintage UK Hip Hop radio, this time it’s a double helping of Mr Timothy Westwood, dated 24th February 1989 & March 3rd 1989, here’s a scan of the front of the inlay:

I think I might have said in an earlier post, that when I used to tape radio shows sometimes I’d be akip and wouldn’t pause the tape, which meant the adverts would still be in, so I used to do these pause button mixes over the adverts, and this tape has 2 such pony mixes, one at about 38 minutes and another around 1 hour… I fully own up to exceptionally bad editing, out of time pauses and THE SHITTEST scratching man has ever witnessed!

There are some other funny moments in the tape, with Westwood classically mis pronouncing names, such as “Skeezo” instead of Stezo, and “Trugay the dub dave” instead of Trugoy from De La Soul, bless him! There’s also a couple of Break to the beat version excursions on this one, I enjoyed ripping it! Enjoy another trip into the foggy mists of the early days of UK Hip Hop!

Deffo some dope Black Steel on this tape, there’s a Cutmaster Swift interview at the start with Dave Pearce & Westwood has Original Concept in the studio. This tape should spark your grey matter!

I’m getting a fair amount of downloads now, and as much as I have no problem with “Hit n Runners”, seeing as the stuff I put up is fairly niche, I’d appreciate a few comments from you lot just to see what you think of these tapes. I would imagine most people that download stuff or subscribe would be similar to be, a British B Boy at heart.

If you didn’t know, I started a forum a mmonth ago, check it out and let’s try to get an old school UK Hip Hop community together. More here, http://discoscratch.co.uk/forum

Well, that about does it for this one, more demo’s from the vaults of the Palace of Villainy coming from me & DuckAlert, fresh new beats & mixtape uploads soon!

Peace & Hairgrease, Waxoff!

Ahhh memories. This is a dope tape actually as it has Original Concept live in session and a recording of Overlord X in interview, with live performances from him & Salt n Pepa from the Apollo in Manchester. There’s a couple of old adverts in this tape that I hadn’t dubbed out either. I’m glad I left them in cos it gives you more of an idea of the age of the tape.

I used to put my mattress on the floor and lay with my headphones on, with the headphones in the tape deck monitor socket so if I fell asleep hopefully the music stopping would wake me up so I could turn the tape over.

I hope you people out there are enjoying this series of tape rips, please leave some comments if it brings back some memories

Next in the series will be my personal recording of UK Fresh ‘86 that I made off Mike Allen. I know you can get this elsewhere on the net, but this is my tape! I recorded it in 3 parts and so will upload in 3 parts, so that should be up later in the week.

Peace y’all!

I was normally pretty good at putting dates and shows on tapes but this one had no inbfo on it. I remember knocking the inlay up on the computer at college when I was doing a business studies GCSE (I got a grade U!).

If you can’t read the front it says the following (ahhh, bless him says the crowd)

I Quote…

“THIS IS THE DEFFEST HIP HOP COMPILATION OF 1989

STARRING

DAVE PEARCE & THE PEARCE POSSE

TIM WESTWOOD

PETE TONG

CHECK OUT GLR FROM 8P.M. – 10 ON SUNDAYS, 7P.M. – 10 ON MONDAYS

CAPITAL RAP SHOWS ON SATURDAY MORNING FROM 12 – 1:30

AND THE DANCE SESSION FROM 8-10 ON SATURDAY EVENING

DON’T FORGET THE SOUL SESSION ON CAPITAL SATURDAY AFTERNOON

SMOKIN’”

Hah, brings a smile to my boat this. I was 16, absolutely craving for any form of hip hop I could get my hands on while chasing birds at college (Havant college in Pompey big up Dave & Mark the Nave!)

So I used to tape the Saturday night Capital show as well as it had NY rap reports and all that, and just used to let the tape run to get a fix of soul stuff as well, although I’ve never bothered with that style of soul really since, I still like the earlier 80s soul stuff but the late 80s started to get dodgy. I suppose it was a way for the hard rocks to go to a dance and cop off with some bird.

On the tracklist if I didn’t know or cou;dn’t catch the name of the track I used to l;eave it blank, put a question mark or listen to the name of it when it was said again and again and make a good guess. Tim was a pro at messing up track names or mis pronouncing names. Still, it makes for entertaining listening!

If you Can’t read my scrawl the tracklist is:

a1.?
a2.Ms Melodie – To Sing All Night
a3.Cookie Crew – Born This Way
a4.TV News
<itunes:summary>I was normally pretty good at putting dates and shows on tapes but this one had no inbfo on it. I remember knocking the inlay up on the computer at college when I was doing a business studies GCSE (I got a grade U!).

If you can't read the front it says the following (ahhh, bless him says the crowd)

I Quote...

"THIS IS THE DEFFEST HIP HOP COMPILATION OF 1989

STARRING

DAVE PEARCE & THE PEARCE POSSE

TIM WESTWOOD

PETE TONG

CHECK OUT GLR FROM 8P.M. - 10 ON SUNDAYS, 7P.M. - 10 ON MONDAYS

CAPITAL RAP SHOWS ON SATURDAY MORNING FROM 12 - 1:30

AND THE DANCE SESSION FROM 8-10 ON SATURDAY EVENING

DON'T FORGET THE SOUL SESSION ON CAPITAL SATURDAY AFTERNOON

SMOKIN'"

Hah, brings a smile to my boat this. I was 16, absolutely craving for any form of hip hop I could get my hands on while chasing birds at college (Havant college in Pompey big up Dave & Mark the Nave!)

So I used to tape the Saturday night Capital show as well as it had NY rap reports and all that, and just used to let the tape run to get a fix of soul stuff as well, although I've never bothered with that style of soul really since, I still like the earlier 80s soul stuff but the late 80s started to get dodgy. I suppose it was a way for the hard rocks to go to a dance and cop off with some bird.

On the tracklist if I didn't know or cou;dn't catch the name of the track I used to l;eave it blank, put a question mark or listen to the name of it when it was said again and again and make a good guess. Tim was a pro at messing up track names or mis pronouncing names. Still, it makes for entertaining listening!

If you Can't read my scrawl the tracklist is:

a1.?
a2.Ms Melodie - To Sing All Night
a3.Cookie Crew - Born This Way
a4.TV News
a5.T La Rock - Flow With The New Style

a12.Sweet Tee - On The Smooth Tip
a13.Kid N Play - Rolling With Kid N Play
a14.London Top 10
15.?

b1.7A3 - Express The Mind

b3.Salt N Pepa Live at Manchester Apollo
b4.Manchester Hip Hop Top 10

I have typed this exactly as I wrote it when I did the tape 20 years ago to maintain some of the mystery there used to be when Tim said the name of a crew wrong or just cocked the words up, or he just didn’t say the name of the joint!

The rip is exactly what is on the tape so all dodgy advert edits are still in.

Good lookin’ on the listen, respect, Waxer, Palace Of Villainy, Friday 19th December 2008.

From about ’88 I actually started to keep the tapes I was recording from the radio and not just recycling the same ten tapes over and over. The result is 70 or so tapes, filled with a mix of Westwood (Capital FM), Max LX & Dave VJ, Richie Rich & Dave Pearce. Most of the tapes have reliable dates on them with tracklistings so it won’t just be a load of pony untitled tapes.

The first one that I kept was just titles “Hip Hop 1″ and that stayed throughout the course of all the tapes. Unfortunately in my infinite wisdom I decided to rip that one about 6 months ago then chuck the tape, but have since lost the recording (what a bell end) so the series starts with “Hip Hop 2″

Great Graf, eh?

Side A Tracklist:

a1.Kool Rock Steady – Turn Up The Bass
a2.Eazy E – We Want EZ
a3.Too Short – Life Is Too Short
a4.De La Soul – Me,Myself & I
a5.De La Soul & JBs – Buddy
a6.Kool G Rap & Polo – Men At Work
a7.Kid Flash – Ain’t Nothin But A Party
a8.Audio 2 – From The Planet Of Brooklyn
a9.TV Pressure news
a10.Overlord X – Weapon Is My Lyric
a11.MC Einstein – My Rhymes Are Smoking
a12.London Hip Hop Top 10
