Simon Harris on DJ Semtex

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, MP3 Download, Semtex, Simon Harris, UK Hip Hop History, UK Hip Hop Radio Shows | Posted on 13-02-2010

Last night I was fumbling about on the net and my old pal Dan Fluent posted up on FACEBOOK that Music Of Life label owner was on DJ Semtex’s show on 1xtra.  Personally, I don’t think Semtex represents Hip Hop… not my definition of it anyway, and I couldn’t actually be arsed to listen to all the dog shit that he plays just to hear the interview with Simon Harris, so I waited until it was up on iPlayer and ripped it to post up here so you get straight to the meat.

I haven’t actually fully listened to this yet so I can’t comment on the content, but Simon Harris’ imprint MOL played probably the most important part in the development of UK Hip Hop since the Electro series from Morgan Khan’s Streetsounds label.  For the unaquainted, MOL was responsible for the first DJ scratch tools that I was aware of, the Breaks, Beats & Scratches LPs.  He was responsible for signing Derek B (the first MOL release being “Good Groove”) and probably the ultimate UK britcore anthem “Untitled” by Hardnoise.

His vision opened up a lot of careers… other artists include MC Duke & Daddy Freddy, and probably my top UK crew Demon Boyz.  He also released the Hard As Hell series, plus the Live Hustlers convention, opening up more avenues for underground UK artists.

Enjoy this and leave a comment about what you thought about Simon Harris’s statements… peace, Waxer.

UK Hip Hop Radio Rips Tape 13

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, Capital Rap Show, Dave Pearce GLR, MP3 Download, Tape Rips, UK Hip Hop Radio Shows, Westwood | Posted on 04-02-2010

Well… been a while, eh? Yep nothing from the Palace of Villainy for a good while… still, onwards & upwards, here we are in 2010, so to kick things off for this year (a little late but never mind!) here’s another tape rip from my collection.

This one has no date, but Dave Pearce mentions live on GLR this easter Weekend and I think this was 1989 so gotta be round there somewhere.  This tape’s got audio from the Cash Money & Marvellous Night Network performance they did, I have it on VHS and loved the routine so much I got the audio off my dad’s video recorder onto tape and put it on this one.  Some nice classic Capital Radio jingles and Westwood one liners in here plus the set from DJ Aladdins DMC performance of the year, cuts are fatal, he was the best at transforming back then easily.

Track List:

Side A:

1.Kane – Lean On Me

2.Eazy E – We Want EZ

3.Special Ed – I got It Made

4.All Out Kings (One of my fave Hip Hop crew names EVER!) – Shack It Up (got this on 12, LOVE IT!)

5.??? Cold Ca$h

6.Gig Guide

7.Black Rock & Ron – Tired Of All Of This

8.DEF – Dougie Fresh

9.Stetsasonic – Ain’t Makin it

10…. In My Move

Side B

1.Aladdin DMC routine

2.De La Soul – Brainwashed Followers

3.? But Def!

4.LL Cool J – Rock The Bells

⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓ Night Network N Sign Radio ⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓

5.K9 Posse – Ain’t Nuthin to it

6.Steady B – Serious (BDP Remix)

7.Soul 2 Soul – Keep On Moving

8.Cash Money & Marvellous Live in the studio

Enjoy… I’ll keep uppin’ ‘em, you keep downin’ ‘em!

King Of The Beats Birmingham 2009

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, Battle Weapon, MP3 Download, UK Hip Hop History, Waxer Demo Track, podcast | Posted on 06-10-2009

Last Thursday I went down to the Hare & Hounds in the South of Brum. Got a lift with DJ Cro (respect for the grub mate!), then into the venue to meet Pogo, Sparkii, Pritt, Mikey D, Maurizio (RSC) Beatmaster and a load of proper Hip Hop heads. Kosyne came up as well and we had a chat, nice one mate ( http://louisden.com )

So I got on stage to do my bit, a little LL Cool J “I’m Bad” intro, followed by the beat. I did 3 parts to the beat as there was loads of material on the records I bought to make a beat out of… and Pritt got back £9 change from a score!

Here’s some pics:

KOTB_WAX_MIKEYD

The night was wicked, with Cro dropping a bad boy underground set, followed by Ian Beatmaster rockin the wheels, then it was me (no one to battle, my opponent Darren Myers never showed up) followed by Sparkki rockin the mic, some beatbox and freestytles, then Pogo ripped it up with some B Boys out the crowd doing their thing, followed by Mikey D tering up the stage!

What a night and to top it off Mikey D announced we are going to do a track together! Can’t ask for more than that!

So here’s the track I made, props to Pritt for his ongoing support love & dedication to Hip Hop, to Mikey forblessing the mic and still slamming MCs on cement after nearly 30 years in the game!

To Pogo/Cro/Beatmaster for killing it on the wheels of steel, Sparkii for all his hard work & ongoing commitment to the scene, Keith for all the background work you did (respect to the molecule), and to all the heads I spoke to in the crowd nuff respect for turning up and supporting real Hip Hop!

Lastly sorry to the geezer who’s head nearly got taken off when I threw my breaks into the crowd!

Waxers’ Tape Rips UK Hip Hop Radio Tape 12

Hip Hop Tape 12 Front

Hip Hop Tape 12 Front

So this tape is a bit messed up, I rewound it, fast forwarded it, tapped it about a bit and still ended up with weird noises!  That’s only for the first 5 minutes or so then it settles down.

The first side and half of side 2 is Dave Pearce with legendary shit mixer KCJ doing a couple of mixes that if in a battle Ced Gee could beat with one hand up a cows’ arse blindfolded on a fisher price turntable!

Still, that’s what makes it so listenable.  If it was DJ Aladdin standard we’d pay it no mind!

Well worth a good listen as there are a lot of writer shout outs on this tape, you never know, you may be on it!!  I have no idea which tape it is but one of the rips I’m doing a writer from Pompey rings up and shouts all the Pompey lads.

This was recorded on 5th/3rd 1989, enjoy it and leave a comment!!!

My yout’ dem helped me with the tape but my daughter couldn’t stop laughing!  Bigup Frog & Schmoo!!!

New UK Lessons mix by BULLI – Lesson Zed (A tribute to Steinski)

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, Electro, MP3 Download, Mash Up, Mix CD | Posted on 09-08-2009

The Disco Scratch Forum has stated to attract some new members, one of which is a guy named BULLI.

He posted in the mixtape section about a mix he did, a tribute to Steinski.

If you are not familiar with Steinski, I suggest you check him out ( http://steinski.com ). He’s responsible, along with Double Dee, for the Lessons mixes. Originators of cut & paste and massively inspirational in the sampling and cut up worlds within Hip Hop. Artists like Art of Noise, Latin Rascals, Cold Cut & Mantronik all owe them credibility. In the Lesson Zed thread in the forum I have put a link to the Solid Steel Podcast which featured a lengthy interview with Double Dee & Steinski, breaking down their experiences when making the Lessons mixes and make for very interesting reading. The thread is here

So onto Bulli’s mix, it was really refreshing to hear someone putting this much effort in to a mix, especially as they are from Blighty. I’m sure you’ll agree the mix is Stupid Fresh, check it out and get in the forum to discuss it! Bulli makes a lot of music and you can check him out here. Big up to Bulli for the mix and I look forward to putting some more up soon.

ENJOY…

August 1st… Download month has started…

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, MP3 Download, Vinyl Rip | Posted on 01-08-2009

Right you lot, for every day in August there will be a fresh Old School UK download for you in the forum.

When you go to the forum and look at the boards, there is a section entitled “UK Hip Hop Downloads upto 1994″. You will see the mixtape, live performance & radio show sections always, but the other download boards require you to have the status of MUTANT ROCKER. This means you need to have at least 5 posts before you can access those sections.

For example, todays download is The Hardrock Soul Movement 12, “The Beat Is Mine”.

The post is here: http://discoscratch.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=68.0

If you click the link above but cannot see the post then you need to post some more to get to it. Now I’m only doing this to drive some more traffic to the forum and engage more people in conversations about the golden age of UK rap.

Hopefully this will raise the profile of the forum and draw some more people in. I am tweeting automatically all the forum posts now and each new download will be highlighted on the main DS site.

All stuff I am uploading will be vinyl rips from my own collection, MP3s at 320kbps/16 bit/44.1khz/stereo quality, which basically means you won’t get a better quality rip off the vinyl ANYWHERE!

This is a great chance for you to get your ears round some quality old tunes. Please help the community grow by ripping your own wax to MP3 and sharing your stuff with other like minded people to ensure we keep the old school alive!

Props to you all in advance for getting involved, peace, WAXER.
