Disco Scratch Radio 6 – Overlord X

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Disco Scratch Radio, UK Hip Hop History, UK Hip Hop Radio Shows | Posted on 19-05-2010

Overlord X has to be in the top 5 MC list of most UK Hip Hop fans.  X brought energy, politics, raw Hip Hop in a B Boy Stance not seen before and became a defining act in the early days of UK rap, moving away from the American sounding party tunes.  His track “14 days in May” broke down many boundaries and showed non believers that Hip Hop was a serious artform and not just kids rapping about gold chains and girls.  Likened to Chuck D & Melle Mel, Overlord X dropped 2 massive LPs and multiple 12s.

In this interview we discuss many aspects of his introduction to rap and his involvement in it, his politics and thoughts on the industry, plus the infamous beef with MC Duke!  Many thanks for Overlord X for having the time, energy and enthusiasm to make Old School UK Hip Hop lovers very happy!  Nuff respect, enjoy the interview, tracklist below, download at the bottom of the post.

I have typed this exactly as I wrote it when I did the tape 20 years ago to maintain some of the mystery there used to be when Tim said the name of a crew wrong or just cocked the words up, or he just didn’t say the name of the joint!

The rip is exactly what is on the tape so all dodgy advert edits are still in.

Good lookin’ on the listen, respect, Waxer, Palace Of Villainy, Friday 19th December 2008.

First in series of about 70 UK Hip Hop Radio Tape Rips Hip Hop 2 Side A

Posted by Waxer | Posted in Audio, Tape Rips, UK Hip Hop Radio Shows, Westwood | Posted on 21-12-2008

From about ’88 I actually started to keep the tapes I was recording from the radio and not just recycling the same ten tapes over and over.  The result is 70 or so tapes, filled with a mix of Westwood (Capital FM), Max LX & Dave VJ, Richie Rich & Dave Pearce.  Most of the tapes have reliable dates on them with tracklistings so it won’t just be a load of pony untitled tapes.

The first one that I kept was just titles “Hip Hop 1″ and that stayed throughout the course of all the tapes.  Unfortunately in my infinite wisdom I decided to rip that one about 6 months ago then chuck the tape, but have since lost the recording (what a bell end) so the series starts with “Hip Hop 2″
