The UK has produced some incredible MCs… this small island we call home has had B Boys, Poppers, Lockers, DJs & Writers from a very early era in the development of the UK music scene. The man I spoke with tonight lived through the inception of the UK Hip Hop scene, became actively involved in it RIGHT FROM THE START and continues to represent up til now.

If you don’t know this British rappers heritage, this interview will bring you up to speed… at least in his formative years. The interview is only the first part of this legacy. Mello goes into proper depth with the melting pot of people in Battersea, South London that influenced his career and helped him carve his individual path through the fledgling scene right to present day. Not many MCs can rip up a mic after reppin’ for nearly 30 years! Here’s one that can and do it with depth, professionalism, attitude & knowledge.

I’ll be analysing the interview over the coming week and updating the database to reflect the people, places & subjects covered in this interview. Until then, pour some knowledge into your ear canals, add a couple of spoonfulls of dub, roots, funk & soul into the mix, sprinkle it with rough rhymes, B Boy mentality and fold in staying power, cook for 30 years & you’ll get Mell ‘O’… ENJOY… download after the tracklist

I have had some reports of problems with downloads so this week the show is hosted on the Sensei server as opposed to the DS server… you shouldn’t experience any problems if you subscribe via RSS, should be no difference but if you prefer you can just hit Sensei up for this show and any of the past shows, peep it here: http://sensei.fm/shows.php?dj=122

I’ve been spending a lot of time over the past couple of weeks slowly getting all my vinyl in order. They were all very roughly in order, but I had loads of years muddled up and as I get older I seem to forget what the hell I got in the racks and what year… in fact it’s starting to just get in to th 80s/90s/00s categories! So, I had to sort this out and started with the older part of my collection. So, I was doing my 1983 12s and it was just such an incredible year I thought it would make a wicked show just to play 12s from that year.

Thing is, 1982 is often cited as the commercial explosion of Hip Hop in the US and 1984 as the explosion in the UK, but some big and important tunes came out this year, with the start of the Street Sounds Electro Series and release of possibly the most important Hip Hop film ever, Wild Style.

Everyone in the chatroom seemed to have a laugh reminiscing, I dropped a couple of news stories from ’83 in the mix and an advert. Also I thought I’d see if everyone was paying attention and play a track from 84 and give a prize to the person who spots it… well I dropped “Jam On It” by Newcleus and almost as soon as it had started, Scenes14 from Suspekt crew spotted it and put it up in the chat, so prize bundle on its’ way to him. Well, it was great to do this show and I just enjoyed letting the 1983 vibes wash over me for a couple of hours… hope you enjoy/enjoyed it too!

On this tape I took the time to carefully go through the shout outs and post them up here. I want to get as many entries on the Database as possible, and I hope there might be people reading this that recognise the shout outs. This is an interesting tape as it features a really in depth interview with De La Soul and a long NY rap report from P Fine talking to George Kay on GLR. I have detailed the shout outs below. It’s mad hearing those lists of writers… that must have been a proud moment for them, being on the radio. I wonder where they are now? Look out for more tape rips coming soon, including a Cypress Hill concert from 93 I illegally recorded using my walkman up my batty crease and a jam with Encona Coarse live on stage in Portsmouth… download after the track list…

Back in 1991 I picked up Def J, Mad Bomber and KLA from the train station in Pompey as they had a jam booked at the Polytechnic. Now I just cannot remember how we got together, I can’t even remember if I hooked it up, I’m sure my man Comic Shop Dan had something to do with organising this… Mr K was a student in Pompey at the time and that was deffo the connection but how it all worked out I just can’t remember… the long and short of it was that these live dudes were in my motor and having a right crack, running down each other with mum jokes, slurping on the blue thunderbirds (all except J) and being raucous, after all, it was a day at the seaside for these guys!!!

This was the start of a friendship lasting nearly 2 decades. Tonight I bring you Original One, aka Def J, frontman of Encona Coarse, the lyrical scientist who devastated our ear canals with “Rhyme Grenade”, “Streets” and the coveted “Just Save It”. J’s career is still ongoing and shows no signs of slowing down. We spoke for over three and a half hours, I managed to get this down to 2 hours and 20 minutes, damn homey is deep!!! So great to reconnect after all this time… for those that don’t know O1 came and wrecked shop with a dope performance at the Heroes Of UK Hip Hop Jam back in 2007, which was about a year after we reconnected. Now listen to the story that formed this heavyweight MC and what this lyrical Jedi has done in his career… download after the tracklist…

 Disco Scratch Radio 14 - Def J

I know I’ve been away and not had much chance to get my act together for the shows, but as some of you know I had some family stuff to deal with. Anyway, stronger than ever I’m back this week and for the next 4 weeks I am back in full interview mode. The lineup is 90% there but not sure yet what day those people will be on (confirming today)

The show is always evolving and now I’ll be including the following sections:

Guest Mix

Your chance to send me a mix for the show, no more than half an hour. Upload to somewhere like Mediafire then use the contact form to let me know you’ve uploaded it, or just hit me on FaceBook. There are no rules, just do your thing! Oh, I’d prefer it if you could not include profanity as over the next year I’m hoping to increase the portfolio to try to get the show on a station like the BBCs Radio 6. E-mail is discoscratch@gmx.com if you prefer.

Pub Quiz

Let the nerd in you jump out and get cred. Probably I’ll be running this every other week. I’ll be going through the rules and stuff in this weeks show, basically you need a team of 2 or more and I need at least 2 teams per quiz…oh, and obviously you need a team name, something like “Rap Nerds”, “Bicuit Dunkers Unite” or “Uphill Gardening Massive”, oh, er… sorry that’s another quiz… so hit your geeky mates up, get a team ready, leave your nines at home and bring your geekiness to the battle…

Wax Can’t Drum

In the forum I put a post up about what track you’d like me to recreate. Once a month I’ll do this and it’ll be on the show first then on youtube and facebook. I decided I might as well push the boat out with this, so I’m actually going to try to recreate every part of the track, so I’ll drum, scratch, do the samples and god help me, rap! There will be a vote for you to pick which old school classic out of four you’d like to hear, so I’m at your mercy! Be prepared for me saying I’ll do it once a month and that turning into once a year though! If I get it down to pat I might even do a set at the DS Christmas Do! (God help YOU LOT!!!)

Competitions

As well as the pub quiz I’ll be running regular competitions with great prizes courtesy of my man Ewan at RareKind Records Brighton. This will probably be every week that I don’t do an interview, or if the interviewee wants to give something away then I’ll be doing something joint with them.

Reviews

If you have a new release let me know. Use the contact form and I’ll send you postal details for vinyl and promotional stuff. For MP3s please e-mail discoscratch@gmx.com. I’ll do a review on the show and also post it up on the main site, like I did with the Solid and Mind 12 and the Chrome EP “Flow Man”

Chart

Also I’ll be doing a chart rundown, probably either once a fortnight or once every month. This will be for whatever Hip Hop is out there that’s floating my boat at that particular time. It’s impossible to get any real idea of sales and such, so when I hear dope stuff I’ll be noting it in a chart. If you know of stuff that’s out there, let me know in the forum, there’s a special section in there. I’ll be posting the chart on the main site as a separate post with a mix of the tracks in that chart so you can hear them or burn to CD or whatever…

Disco Scratch Rap Session

Whenever I get a chance to catch up with MCs I’ll be recording live rap sessions for broadcast exclusively on the show, so if you’d like to come to the Palace Of Villainy with your crew, I’ll hook the mics up and get on the decks while you drop science. I am mobile and have the gear to record wherever, but it’s never like it is in the studio while accompanied with jerk chicken, rice n peas from Tasties in Dudley & Red Stripe from my man J at Bain’s Wines up the road in Netherton! That’s what I’ll be providing for those that want to bless the mics…

Guest Co Hosters

If you feel you’d like to cole rock the spot with me for a show, let me know… I can do it in person with a visit from you to the Palace Of Villainy (preferable) or over Skype. I used skype (username DiscoScratch) with MC Duke and it was crystal clear with no lag, so deffo an option, but never like it is when you do it in a studio together. I’ll be doing some shows with Big Jim soon and hopefully Duce (both from my old radio show) so as usual let me know via the usual channels…

Suggestions

As things progress with the show I love to get your feedback, so in the forum there’s a section for feedback and comments about the show, so let me know if you’re feeling what I’m doing or not, also feel free to add your comments to this post, but the forum is probably better as many more people can be active in the thread

Well, that about wraps it up for this update, speak to you all on the air, peace & hairgrease…
