At last… thanks to my mellow Whirlwind D, I have a record out before I’m 40!  Some of you may recall he came to the legendary POV and recorded 3 cuts with me back last year.  The idea was to release these tracks as a 12 or EP but I just couldn’t commit to anything cos of work etc… but D was like a dog with a bone and made me get off my arse & get this together… well, actually, he did it all I just turned up at the studio & drank Stella with Courvoisier chasers!!!

This is a Christmas party for those that support Ageing B Boys, Heroes of UK Hip Hop & Disco Scratch, so we have not booked any artists, but there will be many artists in the house on the night, so I would be surprised if they don’t bless the mic & the wheels of steel!!!

The only way we can run this event is for EVERYONE to pay, so please don’t be offended if you are refused free tickets…

This is right next to the Digbeth coach station and only a 10 minute walk from Birmingham New Street train station.  There are many hotels in the area, for a decent low priced room try Etap, others are Premiere Inn & Travel Lodge.

Had a good chat tonight with all the regulars in the chatroom, I tried to do something a little different, showcasing some of the stuff people may have missed over the last 10 years or so, some incredibly dope sh*t! This show features 3 cuts from DS beat provider and all round dope individual DuckAlert on the boards with collaborations he’s had with various dope US MCs.  Look out for releases from him next year on Disco Scratch Records.

Should be back to streaming on Sensei & Freestyle next week as I now have the Don Gargan 50MB cable broadband so should be no streaming issues, if there is I’ll be plotting up outside the Virgin offices blasting distorted Britcire 24/7 til they sort it out!  Why can’t they make the upload to 10mb or something? I’ve been spending a lot of time over the past couple of weeks slowly getting all my vinyl in order.  They were all very roughly in order, but I had loads of years muddled up and as I get older I seem to forget what the hell I got in the racks and what year… in fact it’s starting to just get in to th 80s/90s/00s categories! So, I had to sort this out and started with the older part of my collection.  So, I was doing my 1983 12s and it was just such an incredible year I thought it would make a wicked show just to play 12s from that year.

Thing is, 1982 is often cited as the commercial explosion of Hip Hop in the US and 1984 as the explosion in the UK, but some big and important tunes came out this year, with the start of the Street Sounds Electro Series and release of possibly the most important Hip Hop film ever, Wild Style.

Everyone in the chatroom seemed to have a laugh reminiscing, I dropped a couple of news stories from ’83 in the mix and an advert.  Also I thought I’d see if everyone was paying attention and play a track from 84 and give a prize to the person who spots it… well I dropped “Jam On It” by Newcleus and almost as soon as it had started, Scenes14 from Suspekt crew spotted it and put it up in the chat, so prize bundle on its’ way to him.  Well, it was great to do this show and I just enjoyed letting the 1983 vibes wash over me for a couple of hours… hope you enjoy/enjoyed it too!

Adult life sometimes throws such a mix of things at you… I can walk in from work, pick up the mail off the floor and open a court summons while my 4 year old daughter is simultaneously saying “Daddy, Daddy!… I drew this for you today!” and presents me with a picture of our dog, Snoop or something.  You know? At least there’s karma there, ying and yang… But this week, I felt like there were no crayon drawings of any pets, just constant hammerings, I felt like I’d been ripped through by a whole team of blood thirsty rugby players .  Worst thing was I couldn’t do anything about it… so what did I do?  Laugh… PISSED myself!  Haha, I had a joke competition and asked people to make me have a good laugh!

Wax Can’t Drum

In the forum I put a post up about what track you’d like me to recreate.  Once a month I’ll do this and it’ll be on the show first then on youtube and facebook.  I decided I might as well push the boat out with this, so I’m actually going to try to recreate every part of the track, so I’ll drum, scratch, do the samples and god help me, rap! There will be a vote for you to pick which old school classic out of four you’d like to hear, so I’m at your mercy!  Be prepared for me saying I’ll do it once a month and that turning into once a year though!  If I get it down to pat I might even do a set at the DS Christmas Do! (God help YOU LOT!!!)

As well as the pub quiz I’ll be running regular competitions with great prizes courtesy of my man Ewan at RareKind Records Brighton.  This will probably be every week that I don’t do an interview, or if the interviewee wants to give something away then I’ll be doing something joint with them.

Also I’ll be doing a chart rundown, probably either once a fortnight or once every month.  This will be for whatever Hip Hop is out there that’s floating my boat at that particular time.  It’s impossible to get any real idea of sales and such, so when I hear dope stuff I’ll be noting it in a chart.  If you know of stuff that’s out there, let me know in the forum, there’s a special section in there.  I’ll be posting the chart on the main site as a separate post with a mix of the tracks in that chart so you can hear them or burn to CD or whatever…

Disco Scratch Rap Session

Whenever I get a chance to catch up with MCs I’ll be recording live rap sessions for broadcast exclusively on the show, so if you’d like to come to the Palace Of Villainy with your crew, I’ll hook the mics up and get on the decks while you drop science.  I am mobile and have the gear to record wherever, but it’s never like it is in the studio while accompanied with jerk chicken, rice n peas from Tasties in Dudley & Red Stripe from my man J at Bain’s Wines up the road in Netherton!  That’s what I’ll be providing for those that want to bless the mics…

If you feel you’d like to cole rock the spot with me for a show, let me know… I can do it in person with a visit from you to the Palace Of Villainy (preferable) or over Skype.  I used skype (username DiscoScratch) with MC Duke and it was crystal clear with no lag, so deffo an option, but never like it is when you do it in a studio together.  I’ll be doing some shows with Big Jim soon and hopefully Duce (both from my old radio show) so as usual let me know via the usual channels…

Dust… that’s what I had on my fingers after doing the show tonight.  I should have had some snooker referee gloves on handling the wax for tonight’s show!  Some nice old slabs of late 80s US plastic, as usual digging into the US stack plus a couple of new cuts.  I’m now doing jam news every week, on the top of the hour at 10PM every week.  Starting next week I’m also going to do a Disco Scratch chart.  This will run as a post on the Disco Scratch Forum where you can vote for your favourite tracks of the moment, real basic, best tracks reach the top, those that don’t won’t!  It’ll probably take a bit of fine tuning, it’s not like there’s stacks of new material that appeals to the Disco Scratch audience, so I take it on myself to put say 20 tracks on the site and you can vote for your favourite.

I’ll just see how it goes, it’ll be interesting to see how much interaction there is, I mean I think of Disco Scratch like this… once a week at around ten to 9, old buggers shuffle into a darkened working mans club, put their coats on the stand revealing a faded T Shirt bearing the name of an old UK crew, order a cup of tea, break the seal on a packet of chocolate hob nobs and sit down to sift through the beats entering their domes!  At 11 O’clock, they all say their goodbyes in standard Hip Hop sign off format and leave the room with a warm glow, a tea induced high and a bellyfull of family circle biscuit selections… a happy soul to know that there’s life in the old dog yet! (To Quote Websta!)

I’m the barman, chatting with you all and providing the background music… the fire crackles away in the background while we smile at memories of B Boy battles, scarpering from the plod and rival crews after bombing the neighbourhood and doing pause button mixes…

But, for any hard rocks reading this, trust me, Disco Scratch is no pushover, if need be we’ll form like Voltron (whatever the HELL our yank cousins mean by that!) and throw our Hob Nobs in the air while we grab handfulls of import 12s to battle you with, DON’T test the Disco Scratch Sound System, we’ll draw tracks that’ll stomp the plop out of ya!  Just look at our tracklists from the past shows…

Disco Scratch 9 MC Duke

The thing about having so much love for the old school UK scene is I am a fan as much as I am someone who runs a website.  These interviews are so fascinating and uncover so much stuff, I don’t think I’ll stop until I’ve unearthed every rock of UK Hip Hop!  MC Duke has blessed me with a couple of hours of his time and gone into serious depth about his roots in the Hip Hop culture.

For the uninitiated, MC Duke started with Hip Hop from it’s very first inception in the UK.  Before Hip Hop was even in the UK he was a record boy with his dad, learning the craft and being able to DJ and hold a crowd with just one turntable and a mic.  This was well before Rappers Delight even hit these shores.  From his early trip to the Bronx and return to the UK with his experiences in Covent Garden, through the golden era of UK Hip Hop, there’s practically nothing Duke hasn’t experienced or seen.

Duke unearths loads of gems about the old school sphere of Hip Hop in it’s fledgling years, discussing the formation of the early scene, his years on Music Of Life, events he attended and touches on the infamous situation with Overlord X.  He also answers the questions put in by members of the Heroes Of UK Hip Hop Forum and the Disco Scratch forum.  It was a pleasure to verbalise with Duke and I hope all the listeners to the Disco Scratch Show also enjoy this…

Yes that’s right, grab your Motorola flip,stick a few cold Red Stripes in a bag,  borrow your mums car and drive up a hill nearby as you move your aerial about to listen to the dulcit tones of WaxOnWaxOff as he defecates in your ear canals with the dopest flavours from the UK, 21 years ago!  This week I was dusting off some old tunes and I’d sorted out a load of stuff and the majority was from 1989.  Upon closer inspection it dawned on me that 1989 was probably the best year for the UK and decided to do a 1989 special.

The tracks I play are full of wicked lyrical skills, def production, I mean cutting up stabs on top of breaks, like James Brown & The Meters while top rappers deliver raps so sharp you imagine them in pain after they finish rhyming, cutting the insides of their mouths with the razor sharp verbals.

This show takes you back to a time when the UK were HUNGRY for Hip Hop and keen to split from the US and stand on their own.  The UK had by this time got a solid enough base of radio stations, venues, record shops, producers, labels, engineers, club DJS and such to be self supportive and this show proves that.  Listen to the shout outs at the end of the MC Mello tracks “Bizzie Rhymin” to hear a nice slice of who was making the most noise at the time.

The only downer with this show is that I had a few gremlins in the studio last night and couldn’t record it at high quality and for some reason the stream went out at a lower quality so it’s not as bright as usual… but maybe that was fate?  Maybe someone used the force to manipulate that to give it a dusty tinge to replicate those static filled tapes from 1989, with the odd burst of the local taxi firm overriding your tape recording.  Still, the Disco Scratch logo was shone into the night, and the red Scratch phone rang at Repo136′s yard, where a mighty voice from one of the generals of the UK Army’s front line on maneuvers told me it was OK… he was recording…  download is at the bottom of the post after the tracklist…. The tracks I play are full of wicked lyrical skills, def production, I mean cutting up stabs on top of breaks, like James Brown & The Meters while top rappers deliver raps so sharp you imagine them in pain after they finish rhyming, cutting the insides of their mouths with the razor sharp verbals.
