Been a while since I upped a tape rip from the vaults at the POV, so thought I’d get another one from the box and get it on…This one features audio from Dave Pearce on GLR & Westwood on 2 consecutive nights in 1989, Friday 15/4/89 & Saturday 16/4/89 when Westwood was actually worth listening to… do you know I caught some of Westwood on Radio 1 last night when I was washing up & I just really can’t work him out, he was interviewing some mush from the states I’ve never heard of who is basically a modern version of Jodeci and calling him a Hip Hop act… the mind boggles when we all know that Westwood was representing TRUE SCHOOL HIP HOP in clubs & on the radio from the start, I think he was known as a DJ from 1982 or 1983… so why is he so wank now? I dunno, I suppose it’s a job, pays the bills, he’s good at what he does that’s for sure… well, whatever, let this tape rip take your minds back to better musical times…

Standing in the queue with Maf, Mad B, Def J & MC Sphinx on Saturday night 20th March 1993 there I was debating whether or not to take my walkman in. It was a recording walkman and I had a tape in it, a Westwood show. So I thought I’ll try it, put it in my batty crease and went in. Glad I did too! Westwood was wicked and hyped the crowd into a bloodthirsty Hip Hop mad mob!

It was wicked and listening back to the tape I realised I had to rip it and put it up. The geezer in the pic is my mate Maf, we went mad on Cypress, he got these 2 tats, I myself have got a Soul Assassins tat on my right leg, on my calf…

I edited the tape so it flows a bit better as in the jam I just put it on record and then flipped the tape to record as much of Cypress as I could, so it now has the Westwood show that was on it first in one chunk, then the jam in one chunk. Obviously the audio quality is pretty poor, parts of it are alright but the majority sounds like I had it in my pocket when I recorded it. Whatever the weather, it was wicked to hear it again and I had chills hearing the crowd reaction when Westwood was dropping classic after classic, damn I yearn for those days!

Download after the tracklist, if you like it, please leave a comment at the bottom… props to all original Brixton crew!

On this tape I took the time to carefully go through the shout outs and post them up here. I want to get as many entries on the Database as possible, and I hope there might be people reading this that recognise the shout outs. This is an interesting tape as it features a really in depth interview with De La Soul and a long NY rap report from P Fine talking to George Kay on GLR. I have detailed the shout outs below. It’s mad hearing those lists of writers… that must have been a proud moment for them, being on the radio. I wonder where they are now? Look out for more tape rips coming soon, including a Cypress Hill concert from 93 I illegally recorded using my walkman up my batty crease and a jam with Encona Coarse live on stage in Portsmouth… download after the track list…

Here we are again, another piece in the puzzle, another thread in the matrix of maintaining the history of the UK Hip Hop Scene. Another tape from the vaults, this one with Tim Westwood on the Capital Rap Show & Dave Pearce on GLR. Funny when I listen back to these how my 17 year old mind edited out stuff that now I wish was left in, even the shit adverts and such, still, most of the music is here! I seem to remember taping sections of the Saturday dance show just so I had some music that was a bit more palatable by birds so I had stuff to play them in my car!

Gentlemen, ladies, heat up your mics and get practicing. Remember the rap contest on Dave Pearce’s show 20 years or more ago? Disco Scratch is bringing it back.

If you are a proper emcee you can spit poetry off the top of the domepiece at the drop of a hat. This week I invite you to ring me at the Palace of Villainy and get recorded live. The line will be open for half an hour only from 9.30pm to 10pm, then I’ll play the raps one after the other at 10.30 and the chatroom decides the winner.

The reason this is so dope is because you have to have the bollocks to ring up and do 16 bars in one take without nallsing it up! So, real MCs only need apply!

Also I’m bringing back the break to the beat version excursion where I play a break and you have to name the sampling track and artist and for extra geekiness, year and label. It’ll be an old UK cut of course, you gotta ring up with the answer.

In both cases the winner gets whatever plunder I happen to have on that particular week. This week the winner cops an Electro Rock DVD ripped from VHS by yours truly.

So, got what it takes? Come on you old buggers ring up and flex your skills!

Also the legendary “How on earth did he become a Hip Hop scratch DJ on one of the most prominent Hip Hop shows of the day” K C J does 2 utterly dreadful mixes on this tape, good selection of tunes but mixed perhaps while he was simultaneously trying to beat the world record for putting on and taking off a wetsuit complete with flippers, mask & oxygen tank as many times as possible, who knows!!! Still, as pony as his mixing skills were, you gotta love it!!!

This one has no date, but Dave Pearce mentions live on GLR this easter Weekend and I think this was 1989 so gotta be round there somewhere. This tape’s got audio from the Cash Money & Marvellous Night Network performance they did, I have it on VHS and loved the routine so much I got the audio off my dad’s video recorder onto tape and put it on this one. Some nice classic Capital Radio jingles and Westwood one liners in here plus the set from DJ Aladdins DMC performance of the year, cuts are fatal, he was the best at transforming back then easily.

Well… been a while, eh? Yep nothing from the Palace of Villainy for a good while… still, onwards & upwards, here we are in 2010, so to kick things off for this year (a little late but never mind!) here’s another tape rip from my collection.

Track List:
Side A:
1.Kane – Lean On Me
2.Eazy E – We Want EZ
3.Special Ed – I got It Made
4.All Out Kings (One of my fave Hip Hop crew names EVER!) – Shack It Up (got this on 12, LOVE IT!)
5.??? Cold Ca$h
6.Gig Guide
7.Black Rock & Ron – Tired Of All Of This
8.DEF – Dougie Fresh
9.Stetsasonic – Ain’t Makin it
10…. In My Move
Side B
1.Aladdin DMC routine
2.De La Soul – Brainwashed Followers
3.? But Def!
4.LL Cool J – Rock The Bells
⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓ Night Network N Sign Radio ⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓
5.K9 Posse – Ain’t Nuthin to it
6.Steady B – Serious (BDP Remix)
7.Soul 2 Soul – Keep On Moving
8.Cash Money & Marvellous Live in the studio

Enjoy… I’ll keep uppin’ ‘em, you keep downin’ ‘em!

I think I might have said in an earlier post, that when I used to tape radio shows sometimes I’d be akip and wouldn’t pause the tape, which meant the adverts would still be in, so I used to do these pause button mixes over the adverts, and this tape has 2 such pony mixes, one at about 38 minutes and another around 1 hour… I fully own up to exceptionally bad editing, out of time pauses and THE SHITTEST scratching man has ever witnessed!

There are some other funny moments in the tape, with Westwood classically mis pronouncing names, such as “Skeezo” instead of Stezo, and “Trugay the dub dave” instead of Trugoy from De La Soul, bless him! There’s also a couple of Break to the beat version excursions on this one, I enjoyed ripping it! Enjoy another trip into the foggy mists of the early days of UK Hip Hop!

Deffo some dope Black Steel on this tape, there’s a Cutmaster Swift interview at the start with Dave Pearce & Westwood has Original Concept in the studio. This tape should spark your grey matter!

I’m getting a fair amount of downloads now, and as much as I have no problem with “Hit n Runners”, seeing as the stuff I put up is fairly niche, I’d appreciate a few comments from you lot just to see what you think of these tapes. I would imagine most people that download stuff or subscribe would be similar to be, a British B Boy at heart.

If you didn’t know, I started a forum a mmonth ago, check it out and let’s try to get an old school UK Hip Hop community together. More here, http://discoscratch.co.uk/forum

Well, that about does it for this one, more demo’s from the vaults of the Palace of Villainy coming from me & DuckAlert, fresh new beats & mixtape uploads soon!

Peace & Hairgrease, Waxoff!

More of Tim’s dulcit tones, a dodgy mini mix from me (as DJ Radiate) to cover an advert in the tape and some UK Hip Hop news to top it off.
